A Lifelong Love of Vintage, Fabric & Beautiful Things

Hi, I’m Denise Keniston, owner and curator of Vintage Luxury Bedding. I’ve been collecting and living with vintage clothing, textiles, antiques and beautiful things for most of my life. Vintage Luxury Bedding grew naturally from that lifelong love of finding, researching and preserving pieces that deserve another chapter.

My love of vintage began long before “vintage” became the word we use today. In the 1970s, when I was in high school, I was already shopping secondhand stores for clothing from the 1950s and ’60s. I wore granny dresses with old barn boots and loved the individuality of things that had already lived a life before they found their way to me.

That never really stopped. Over the years, vintage clothing became antique furniture, textiles and pieces for my home. I have always been especially drawn to fabric — florals, paisleys, stripes, beautiful cottons and the extraordinary artistry that can exist in a piece of cloth. I’m not an accomplished seamstress, but I made curtains, pillowcases and slipcovers simply because I wanted to surround myself with fabrics and patterns I loved.

Eventually, I became a collector of bedding and textiles. Partly to support my collecting habit — I can admit that now — I began selling some of my finds. Then, several years ago, I had an opportunity to acquire a large amount of vintage Ralph Lauren bedding. That was followed by Simply Shabby Chic and Shabby Chic pieces, along with beautiful textiles and home furnishings from other makers. One thing led to another, and Vintage Luxury Bedding grew from there.

More than a vintage shop. The collector in me always wanted to know what these pieces were: the name of a discontinued floral, which fabrics belonged to a collection, or what originally coordinated with a favorite pattern. Finding those answers was often surprisingly difficult, so I began documenting what I learned. Today, Vintage Luxury Bedding is home to growing reference libraries for discontinued Ralph Lauren bedding and Simply Shabby Chic bedding, created to help collectors identify treasured patterns and research hard-to-find pieces.

Beauty worth keeping. I love quality, but quality comes in many forms and at many price points. What matters to me is the beauty and artistry of the piece itself — a wonderful fabric, an extraordinary floral, a classic paisley, vintage wallpaper or a textile that simply makes a room feel different. I surround myself with these things in my own home and in the Vintage Luxury Bedding shop.
